As a board-certified eye surgeon who has performed more than 15,000 vision correction procedures, I can attest that consumers have never had such an array of options for their visual needs.
Intralase: At our surgery center, we have the latest version of this laser which helps make the flap - without incision - for LASIK. Combined with the VISX Star 4 excimer laser, this makes LASIK blade-free, and provides a safer and more precise procedure.
Custom Vue LASIK: Because each person’s eyesight is unique, Wavefront technology has revolutionized LASIK and given surgeons the ability to create a new level of customization in correction of corneal mis-shapes which cause nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism. The VISX Star 4 also has the sophisticated Active Trak three-dimensional eye tracker and iris registration capability.
ReStor: This FDA-approved intraocular lens (IOL) replaces the existing lens - and gives the patient 50 and older near, intermediate and far vision without glasses or contacts and eliminates the need for future cataract surgery. (I was one of only 15 doctors selected by the Food and Drug Administration to perform the patient trials for ReStor.)
ReZoom: Another multifocal lens like ReStor, this IOL has five focusing zones to help the older individual overcome the need for reading glasses (presbyopia).
Crystalens: This was the first FDA-approved implantable lens, but requires the lens to vault within the eye as opposed to ReStor and ReZoom, which have the multifocal capabilities constructed within the lens itself.
Visian ICL: This Collamer implantable contact lens is designed for individuals who have so much nearsightedness, that LASIK is not an option. It also helps those with dry eyes and thin corneas.
Verisyse ICL: Like the Visian, this phakic intraocular lens is implanted behind the cornea and in front of the iris to give persons who are very nearsighted an alternative to LASIK. The Verisyse is made of PMMA, a material used safely in cataract surgery for the past 50 years.
You can be assured I have experience with each of the aforementioned surgeries.
