Recently, PBS aired a special on refractive surgery titled Laser Vision, 20/10 by 2010? narrated by Walter Cronkite. Following this showing we have been inundated with calls from patients inquiring about "custom LASIK" and having LASIK using "custom ablation with wavefront mapping." What is the best treatment today for a person seeking LASIK surgery?
First of all, it should be clearly understood that today's "standard" LASIK surgery is already customized to each patient`s needs by "wavefront-adjusted" treatment profiles. New laser software now provides safer and better outcomes than just a few months ago. A battery of tests performed pre-operatively accomplish this in conjunction with the new software now available.
Custom LASIK using custom ablation with "wavefront-assisted" treatment profiles is another new addition in refractive surgery in the U.S. It offers a somewhat higher level of customization which will enable the surgeon to provide better results to select patients under certain circumstances.
Custom LASIK using custom ablation with "wavefront-guided" treatment profiles provides the highest level of customization. Wavefront-guided LASIK creates an individual treatment profile for each individual eye. Approximately 20% of LASIK patients would fully benefit from wavefront-guided treatments.
The patient must keep in mind that the more customized the LASIK treatment, the more expensive the surgery will be. Customization requires more technology, more expertise, and more time. It is not unlike purchasing a good suit. Will "off-the-rack" suffice or do you need one "custom-made" to fit your unusual shape?
We are presently using wavefront mapping to determine which treatment would best serve each individual patient`s needs. With the additional safety and quality of vision provided by wavefront technology, we know the patient will be delighted with the results long before 2010!
